Drug Monitoring

Many pets now take medications daily to control a variety of medical problems including arthritis, heart disease, allergies, diabetes, and kidney disease. As with humans, the use of many drugs can cause side effects in the body. It is very important to prevent side effects while still helping the pet live a healthier life.

Part of preventing side effects involves routine bloodwork to check the function of internal organs - most importantly the liver and kidneys. Other medications affect the red and white blood cells, the pancreas, the eyes, or other body organs, so different testing is required. At Scott County Animal Hospital, we follow an extensive monitoring program for all pets taking chronic medications. We believe that this is essential in preventing damage to other body organs.

Your veterinarian will advise you of the appropriate testing intervals for your pet's medications. We will call you to remind you when these tests are due. Please be sure to follow through on these tests, as they are being performed with your pet's health in mind. Failure to continue with drug monitoring can lead to severe side effects which may be worse than the diseases which were being treated.
